Named by Car and Driver magazine as one of the Top 10 Cars of 2008 and also having the distinguished honor of being nominated as the best roadster for 2008, the rear-wheel drive, 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata is replicated after the 2007 model, but with some minor improvements for this year.
Available in eight trims, with the least expensive being the SV model and the most expensive the Grand Touring with Power Retractable Hardtop, prices for the Miata range from around $21,000 to $28,000. Choices in models are the SV, Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring with each model sporting either a hard or soft top and 5.4 cubic feet of trunk space (including the top’s storage).
The 2.0 liter, 166 horsepower engine delivers 140 lb-ft of torque and features either a 5-speed manual transmission with overdrive or a 6-speed automatic transmission. However, the top model, the Grand Touring with Power Retractable Hardtop model, features a model-specific, 6-speed manual transmission, as one of its transmission selections. The same model also features an upgraded engine with 166 horsepower for the automatic transmission model and 170 horsepower for the manual transmission model.
Differences in fuel economy vary by model as well, with the entry-level SV Miata getting 22 city and 27 highway miles per gallon and the upgraded Grand Touring with Power Retractable Hardtop model getting 21 city and 27 highway miles per gallon, based on the 6-speed manual transmission model. The 6-speed automatic transmission only fared slightly worse with 20 miles per gallon in city driving conditions and 27 miles per gallon in highway driving conditions. Recommended fuel for all 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s is Premium unleaded with an octane count of 91 or greater.
All 2008 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s have disc-style, hydraulic, ABS brakes, and depending on model, use size 205/50 R16 inch tires (for 16.5” wheels) or size 205/45 R17 (for the 17” wheels). The Miata’s front displays the use of ventilated brakes, while its rear features solid disc brakes.
If purchasing the hardtop trim model, the hardtop can be folded and stored in a period of less than 12 seconds. Additionally, the Touring and Grand Touring models come standard with a Bose 6-disc CD changer. Interior colors on all trim models include black (fabric or leather), tan (leather) or saddle brown with blue stitching trims (leather).
Optional upgrades include the Convenience Package (available on all models except the SV), Suspension Package (available on the Touring and Grand Touring models only), Premium Package #1 (available on the Grand Touring and Special Edition models only), Premium Package #2 (available on the Grand Touring and Special Edition models only), Run-flat tires (available on the Touring and Grand Touring models only) and ULEV Emissions Equipment Package (available on all models).
