Although the American market may be getting a little tired of cross-over vehicles, Ford feels confident that their 2009 Flex will change things up quite a bit. Caught somewhere between a wagon, a minivan and a small SUV, Ford is betting that this model will appeal to a wide swath of consumers. It is set to replace the Freestar which had paltry sales and will be made available in dealerships during the summer of 2008.
The Flex features a very streamlined exterior and Ford execs feel that it has the opportunity to become as iconic as the Mustang. That may be jumping the gun a bit, but at first look, the Flex is definitely a cross-over that will catch your eye. The squared off body and low roof should appeal to consumers who are more comfortable with a car than an SUV but need a little more space for their dollar.
Ford is offering a special two-tone paint combination, in a limited amount of colors, in an effort to help sport up the Flex a little bit more. However, it’s the inside that may be the kicker for many buyers. The features here are well worth making the switch and should appeal to the market Ford is now calling “People Movers” instead of the old term “mini van.”
Regardless of any pre-conceived notions about mini-vans, the Flex’s interior is incredible. Refrigeration units will help mom’s keep snacks fresh or backpackers can store their Gatorade. Ford also included their new Sync communication system in this model, which allows for better communication between drivers and passengers. This may or may not work, depending on how many times you’re asked, “Are we there yet,” through the system. The 2,300 song selection may help with that though.
One feature that really stood out on the interior is the new Multi-Panel Vista Roof as well as the new interior lighting options that increase the ambient lighting effect in the vehicle. Ford is definitely trending towards utilizing more natural light in their vehicles and the Vista roof option is proof positive that they are taking it seriously.
Safety wise, there is a lot going on with the Flex. It features a back-up camera to help you avoid accidents, Advance Trac with Roll Stability Control, Safety Canopy Side Curtain Airbags and standard cabin air bag safety features as well. Under the hood, the “intelligent” four wheel drive system keeps you safe on the road.
With a 3.5L V6 fuel efficient engine, this may be the perfect vehicle for many who are trying to save at the pump without losing the ability to take their lives on the road with them. Ford has managed to combine just enough options that are revolutionary enough to convince new consumers to give their cross-over a try. It may not be quite a mini-van, but it can still get the job done when it comes to hauling kids, bikes and anything else your life may require.
